Abstract

Plants are proven to be reliable sources of antimicrobial compounds in traditional medicinal systems. The leaf and stem extracts of Cestrum nocturnum were screened for antimicrobial activity. The extracts prepared in various solvents were examined against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella paratyphi A, Salmonella paratyphi B, Shigella flexineri, Staphylococcus aureus. The ethyl acetate stem and leaf extracts were found to be most active. The results were compared with Penicillin and Streptomycin.
